The iTunes radio directory is a handy client for browsing internet radio stations. The browser itself is built into the iTunes software client and can be accessed through means of the highlighted radio tower icon visible in the picture below.
Within the directory all the available radio stations are organized by expandable genre groupings with individual stations displaying a title, a description and a bit rate, all of which are sort-able. Double clicking on any given station will launch it inside the client. Having launched a stream you can rewind, pause and fast forward using the controls located at the top of the client. Changing station is just a matter of clicking on a different station and moving on. Finally you will to need to download and install iTunes if you haven’t done so already and create an account before you can start using it.
Getting your radio station listed in the iTunes Radio directory
As we’ve already discussed elsewhere iTunes Radio is a great directory of internet radio stations and one of the best for generating listener traffic with support for radio stations broadcasting in MP3, AAC and ACC+ formats. However in order to be listed there’s a formal process with a few requirements which we’re going to discuss here.
The first step is to download the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet which Apple require you to complete or inclusion. This spreadsheet can be downloaded here. Here again you will need to download and install iTunes if you haven’t done so already and create an account. Also required will be a logo in JPG or PNG format, 1400*1400 pixels in size.
Once you’ve completed the above you can set about filling in the spreadsheet which will ask you for the following information:
1. City / State:
4. Explicity: Yes or No?
6: Home page:
7: Approved: Yes.
8. Provider contact information:
9. Status: Active / Inactive?
13. Commercial: Yes / No?
14. Bandwidth: Kb/s
Where the fields above come with a drop down option, you should make sure to choose the correct one. After which you’ll need to return your completed spreadsheet back to Apple by email, with your logo(s) attached, to the following address: email@example.com with subject: Station Submission <STATION NAME>. Responses are generally processed within 5 business days and you will be notified after your submission has been processed.
